What’s the finance process like at Group 1 Toyota?

Most buyers think financing is something that happens to them in a back office, after the car is picked and the clock is running. At our store most of it can start before you arrive. Get an instant trade-in offer and get pre-approved online, choose the vehicle, then settle the rate and term with our finance team.

The part worth knowing is how much of the final number you can read ahead of time. Georgia’s one-time title tax and an uncapped doc fee set the out-the-door price, and you can read both before you sit down.

Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in Lilburn. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.

How does financing a Toyota work here, step by step?

Four steps, in this order. Get an instant trade-in offer online from your license plate, VIN or make and model. Then complete our two-step credit application to get pre-approved, choose a vehicle, and meet our finance team, online or in person, to settle the rate and term. Each vehicle on our website shows its own sale price.

The order matters because most buyers finance. Experian found financing in 80.5% of new vehicle purchases in Q1 2025 (Experian, 2025). If you are likely to finance, settle the loan questions while nobody is waiting on you.

Know five terms before you read a finance sheet

Five words carry most of a finance sheet. If you know them, you can check the numbers yourself.

Term What it means on your paperwork
Pre-approval A lender’s offer, with a rate and an amount, before you pick a vehicle
APR The yearly cost of the loan, as a percentage
Term How many months you will pay
Out-the-door price Vehicle price plus fees and taxes, the total you actually pay
Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) Georgia’s one-time tax at titling, in place of sales tax

The out-the-door price is the one that decides your payment. A low sticker price tells you little until the fees and tax sit on top of it.

Value your trade online before you visit

Start with the trade, because it sets how much you need to borrow. Our online tool gives an instant trade-in offer from your license plate, VIN or make and model. The offer holds for seven days or up to 250 miles, and you can enter it in our payment calculator to see what it does to a payment.

It also shows you where you stand. Edmunds reported that 28.2% of trade-ins in July 2025 carried negative equity, and those buyers owed an average of $6,902 more than the vehicle was worth (Edmunds, 2025). If you owe more than the car is worth, you want to know that before you pick a payment.

Ken M. described how a trade conversation can go. In an April 2026 Google review, he wrote: “The staff gave us exactly what we wanted for our trade AND gave us the price we asked for on the truck. We were out the door in 2 hours.”

Get pre-approved online and know who is pricing your loan

A pre-approval is a lender’s offer. Whoever makes the offer prices the loan, so the rate you carry into the finance office is the first thing you control. Get it online, write down the APR and term, and keep it as your yardstick. Our credit application takes two steps and a few minutes.

Then ask one plain question in the finance office: which lender is behind this offer? If the number matches or beats your pre-approval, good. If it does not, you know before you sign.

If this is you Do this first
You owe more on your trade than it is worth Get the trade valuation, then size the loan to the gap
You want the lowest payment Compare APR and term together, since a longer term lowers the payment and raises total interest
You have a rate from your own bank Bring it, and compare it line by line
It is your first car purchase Get pre-approved first, so you shop with a budget

Choose the vehicle, then read the terms on that unit

Pick the exact vehicle first. Each vehicle on our website shows its sale price, so the number you read is for the car in front of you, not an average.

Read three things on that sheet: the vehicle price, the APR, and the term. Then ask for the out-the-door total. Jonte M. wrote in an April 2026 Google review: “Pricing was upfront and clearly communicated, the out-the-door number was exactly what was paid. No games, no pressure.”

What Georgia adds to your out-the-door price

Georgia charges no sales tax on a titled vehicle. It charges Title Ad Valorem Tax instead, at 7.0% of fair market value, paid once when the vehicle is titled. New residents pay 3% (Georgia Department of Revenue, 2026).

Charge Amount in Georgia Who sets it
Title Ad Valorem Tax 7.0% of fair market value, one time Georgia Department of Revenue
Title fee $18 Georgia Department of Revenue
License plate fee $20 for a regular passenger car or light pickup Georgia Department of Revenue
Lemon Law fee $3, collected by the dealer on a new vehicle Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division

The tax, title, plate and Lemon Law amounts are set by the state, so they should look the same at any Georgia dealer. The state fee table puts the title fee at $18 and the plate fee at $20 (Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, 2026). The Lemon Law fee is $3 on a new vehicle sale (Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division, 2026). Georgia gives you 30 days from the purchase date to apply for a title (Georgia Department of Revenue, 2026), so do not let that date slip.

Georgia does not cap the doc fee, and it is taxed

Georgia sets no limit on dealer documentary fees, so buyers should read the amount rather than assume it. The Attorney General’s office says only government fees such as tax, title, tag and Lemon Law fees may be left out of an advertised price. Any other amount a dealership collects must be in it (Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division, 2019).

The doc fee also feeds the tax. The Department of Revenue counts doc fees in the retail selling price that TAVT is based on (Georgia Department of Revenue, 2026). At 7.0%, every $1,000 of doc fee adds $70 in tax. So find the doc fee on the sheet for the unit you picked, and look at it twice.

What to check in the finance office before you sign

You can finish the checklist in a few minutes. Bring your pre-approval and the unit’s price sheet.

  • Vehicle price. It should match the price on the specific unit you chose.
  • Doc fee. Find it as its own line, and note that it is taxed.
  • APR and term. Compare both to your pre-approval, and ask which lender is behind the offer.
  • Trade value. It should match your online trade-in offer, which holds for seven days or up to 250 miles.
  • Optional products. Ask whether each add-on is optional, what it costs, and how it changes the payment.
  • Out-the-door total. Confirm the final number, including TAVT, title, plate and Lemon Law fees.
Check You are done when
Price It matches the unit’s sheet
Fees Every line has a name and an amount
Loan APR and term match what you were told
Total You can say the out-the-door number out loud

Frequently asked questions

Can I finance a used or certified pre-owned Toyota here?

Yes. We offer new Toyota financing, pre-owned car loans and Toyota leases, and you can apply online.

Does my trade-in count toward the purchase?

Yes. Get an instant online offer, valid for seven days or up to 250 miles, and put it toward your next vehicle. If you owe more than it is worth, the gap changes how much you need to finance.

Does each vehicle show a price?

Yes. Each listing shows its sale price.

Does Georgia charge sales tax on a car?

No. Georgia charges Title Ad Valorem Tax instead, a one-time 7.0% of fair market value at titling. New residents pay 3%.

How much is the doc fee?

Georgia sets no cap, so the amount is whatever the dealer charges. On our listings the doc fee is $999, and an electronic filing fee of $198 is also listed. Because it is taxed, a higher doc fee also raises your TAVT.

Do I finish everything online?

You can start online with the trade-in offer and the credit application, and our finance team finishes the paperwork with you. We also ship vehicles out of state.

The number you sign is mostly set before you sit down

The finance office is where you confirm a number, not where it gets made. Your trade-in offer, your pre-approved rate, the vehicle’s sale price and Georgia’s fixed charges are all readable ahead of time. What is left to check is the doc fee, the add-ons, and the lender behind the offer. Walk in knowing those and you sign what you already understood.
